In Memory of Grandpa
I find it funny that every time I chop onions, be them any kind, Sydney always wants to try some and usually ends up with a plate of chopped onions. This from the kid that will never eat them in prepared meals. Every time this happens I think of my Grandpa who passed away 4 years ago on Christmas Eve. He also loved onions so much that he would eat them raw all the time; directly out of the ground, if planted at the farm and on peanut butter sandwiches. Yes, I did say on peanut butter sandwiches! This was my only Grandpa growing up, and for the first 8 years of
my life, I was his favorite granddaughter. I was also his only granddaughter, so
that may have been why I was his favorite. Let me say for those that didn't know him, he had Alzheimer's. I will never forget my last true conversation with my grandfather. It took place on Friday after Thanksgiving of
2003. We were talking about going to the motorcycle races at the track. My grandfather loved motorcycles, which is I think why I tolerate my husband's love of them. I asked him what kind of motorcycle we would take to the races and his response was, "A Harley of course!" He asked me if my dad would let me go with him, and I said I didn't think it would be a problem. Then I asked him who I was--I liked to test him at times--his reply was, "You are my sweetie pie." I said yes, but what is my name? He said, "Kathleen of course." That was an awesome moment that I will never forget because he did know who I was, and that day in November we were going to go to the motorcycle races and have a good old time.
We love and miss you Grandpa!
